Dr Charles Lawrence   PhD

Senior Lecturer in hydrogeology in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Melbourne.  He gained a doctorate in 1972 at Melbourne University for a regional study of the hydrogeology of the southern Murray Basin, which was innovative by developing and applying a 2D regional numerical model  to steady state flow, a GIS system for mapping hydrogeolgic parameters and integration of hydrochemical evolution with groundwater flow systems.

He initially worked for the Groundwater Section of the Victorian Geological Survey, and for a decade spanning the 1970’s and 1980’s was head of the Groundwater Section. He was the inaugural vice-president of the Australian Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH). International experience spans Latin America Asia and the Middle East

He headed the United Nations Low-Latitude Desert Project, was the Technical Director of UNDP project of the Norte Grande of Chile and more recently was the principal hydrogeologist for a technical cooperation project between Australia and Argentina for the assessment of groundwater for irrigation in San Luis Province, Argentina.

His special interests are groundwater education, groundwater resource evaluation and management especially in arid areas, groundwater contamination and control of the salinity problem in the Murray Basin. He is a regular participant of groundwater conferences and has published over 100 reports and books.

He is a millennium member of IAH, and a member of the Geological Society of Australia and the Royal Society of Victoria
